10-04-2026 Maybe you heard about it? Just a few hours after discovering a cyber attack, Eindhoven University of Technology shut down its network during the night of Saturday, January 11 to Sunday, January 12 in 2025.

The hacker had already gained access to the network and remained undetected for several days. As a result, education was virtually at a standstill for a week.
The cybersecurity company Fox-IT later presented the situation from their perspective in a management report, which you can access via this
link.

On the right, you can see how we translated this report into an Event Map (click to open the PDF).
The Event Map provides a complete overview of the cause-and-effect relationships behind the incident, including the actions and measures taken (dark yellow).
We have also supplemented the Event Map with research questions (light green) and related actions (light yellow) concerning unknown causes — or causes that were not mentioned in the report.
In this way, an Event Map clearly shows what is known, as well as what is not yet known.
